Why an Internship is Important x Stroff.com

The summer holidays are here!!! Rejoice all my fellow university friends! Oh no, but are we TOO free during this holiday? Head over to Stroff.com to look at the many job opportunities available!

If you haven't heard, Stroff.com offers exciting student internships (full time/part time/summer), career guidance and professional networking opportunities for student interns in Singapore.

Stroff.com reaches out to the local universities such as SMU, NTU, NUS and SIM, and also the other private and foreign universities and polytechnics in Singapore, to help student interns find meaningful student internships to achieve their career aspirations. Since May 2014 when they started this initiative, they have connected many students to companies for student internships in Singapore to date!

It's the summer holiday for us university students again, and we have 3 months worth of time! Yes, from May to August, we are FREE. You would think it's a blast, having so much free time with no stress. However, it's not that simple. Because after lazing around at home for a week with nothing to do, we start getting bored. Of course, not all of us face the same problem. Some people can sit at the same spot and watch some Korean drama for days on end. I can't do that! Furthermore, staying at home everyday not doing anything makes me feel so useless, not contributing to society. (Is it only me who feel this way? I doubt so!)

So from my last summer holiday, I already started looking for Singapore internship or part-time jobs for students! I knew that it would greatly benefit my resume, and I also didn't want to waste 3 months of my life slacking at home. But first, why do I (and everybody else) want so desperately to find an internship?

Why an internship is important!

Internships provide work experience opportunities to university students, recent graduates and people considering career changes. Employers are willing to hire interns with little or no experience, especially if the intern is willing to accept little or no monetary compensation. However, the benefits of doing an internship go far beyond your pay cheque. Let's see.

1. TO GAIN VALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE.
Because...

Yes, many many jobs requires experience in the same field, or at least some experience in the working world. An internship provides the opportunity to gain hands on work experience that you just can’t get in the classroom

2. HAVE AN EDGE IN THE JOB MARKET
Employers are usually more concerned with work experience than qualifications, and internships are often the only way to get the work experience you need to secure a job, so they're a vital part of your resume. I believe most of us know that without an internship or at least a part-time job experience, it would be a lot harder to actually clinch a job. Many employers prefer or require applicants who have done an internship or relevant work experience and in many of the more competitive job markets it is essential to set you apart from the others.

3. TRANSITION INTO A JOB
Employers see interns as prospective employees and many finish their internships and continue working with the company full time. Internships are the number one way for employers to find new staff in the US. Think of it as a really long interview, after which you’ve proved that you are a capable and hardworking employee. Just as you’re giving the industry and the company a trial run, they’re doing the same for you.

4. DECIDE IF THIS IS THE RIGHT JOB FOR YOU
If you’re not sure if this is the right career for you, doing an internship is a great way to try it out. Internships are generally short-term, so you can test your future career without committing and find out if it is a career that will satisfy you.

5. NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES
Internships are a great way to meet people in your field. Even if you have experience, knowing people never hurts. An internship allows you to meet people who might help you land a job later on and give you the contacts in the industry you’re trying to break into. Plus, references from people in the industry will really add weight to your application.

6. APPLY CLASSROOM KNOWLEDGE
An internship can be seen as the pinnacle of your undergraduate education and give you the chance to use the skills you've learned in the classroom in a real-world setting. It’s a chance to prove the worth of your qualifications and to show that you can perform in the role you've been given. If not wouldn't whatever we learnt in the process of taking our degree, be totally irrelevant and a waste of time?

7. GAIN CONFIDENCE
Getting experience is a great way to build your confidence. What's more, if you have an impressive resume, you will be more confident in your chances of securing a job. After you have done an internship, if an interviewer asks if you know how to do something, you won’t say “um, yes, I think I would be able to do that" but can say “absolutely" and supplement your assertion with examples.
