Joo Bar - Design Your Bibimbap

Joo is a sleek, casual and inviting venue within a heritage three-storey shophouse in the heart of Singapore along Tan Quee Lan Street offering top notch modern Korean bites and creative drinks in a space that exudes a laid-back vibe with a tasteful dose of edginess.

I had the chance to head down to Joo Bar to design my own bibimbap and wowwww it was so affordable and delicious! If you are a fan of Korean mixed rice bibimbap, you cannot miss this!

‘Joo’ is ‘alcohol’ in Korean – and Joo, the bar and restaurant takes it seriously, with a funky drinks menu complemented by quality food.

An unusual concept likely to the delight of Korean rice wine fans, Joo is the first in Singapore to proudly brew its signature drink – the makgeolli – as well as serve it on tap. This cloudy, light-bodied and mild-tasting drink is 6-8% ABV and best served cold.

Within the heritage exterior is a swish interior that beckons with rich hues of black and copper, complemented by dark Korean pinewood furniture specially imported from Korea. Whitewashed walls provide contrast and also draw attention to the hexagonal copper ceiling lights at the entrance and on the second floor that were painstakingly handmade by the owners.

The second and third levels also boast welcoming outdoor spaces that face an air well bathed with natural light and a wall lined with pretty foliage. On the second floor, a wall with hand-painted tongue-in-cheek illustrations of Korean drinking etiquette educates and amuses at the same time. In addition, these levels have been designed to convert easily into three private rooms each.

So what's so special about the bibimbap at Joo Bar? Well, you get to design your own bibimbap and choose your favourite ingredients to include in your rice bowl! Here's the menu to choose the ingredients you would want to go into your customized bibimbap and each bibimbap starts from only $10.90!

This is with their purple rice! Looks pretty right especially with the egg on top! I love that their kimchi is minced, making it so much easier to mix with the rice and the other ingredients for a well-balanced overall taste.

This is with their Quinoa, a type of Korean rice which is smaller-grained than the usual rice! The ingredients were all freshly prepared where possible, and it really makes the whole dish very flavourful. All of us cleaned our bowls!

Thank you Joo Bar for having us over! We had a great time catching up and enjoying the food and ambience. I know friends who frequent Joo Bar and looking at their delicious food and wine, it's not surprising at all!
