I'm pretty sure many of you have heard of the term Lifelong Learning. Yes, we vaguely know that it's important, but why and how do we get started on this continuing learning? ‘Schooling’ is only one type of learning. There are many other opportunities to further your knowledge and develop the skills you need throughout life!
Let me share with you a little more about the benefits of Continuing Education, and keeping yourself updated with the latest technological advances, as well as utilising the 'free' money from the Singapore government: SkillsFuture Credit!
Knowledge can be acquired and skill sets developed anywhere – learning is unavoidable and happens all the time. Lifelong learning is about creating and maintaining a positive attitude to learning both for personal and professional development.
One of the most important benefits of lifelong learning is keeping you employable! Always keeping up with the latest technological advances means that you update your skill set and companies will be happy to hire/keep you. It'll help you get a high pay too after you've upgraded your skill set.
Learning can keep your brain active, which makes you less bored as you grow older, and makes life more meaningful! The environment we live in now also allows for on-the-go learning with many instructions available on the Internet; you can fix pretty much anything in your home by watching a YouTube video.
This anytime, anywhere learning has created a DIY culture that allows people interested in everything from home improvements to crafting to cooking to learn practical skills that they may have otherwise hired out for. Can you see the importance of this? It means that you'll be able to provide basic medical attention to your loved ones around you in the event that it's needed!

Fortunately for us in Singapore, we have a national movement named SkillsFuture to help us with our Lifelong Learning! SkillsFuture will provide Singaporeans with the opportunities to develop their fullest potential throughout life, regardless of their starting points. Through this movement, the skills, passion and contributions of every individual will drive Singapore's next phase of development towards an advanced economy and inclusive society.
SkillsFuture Credit aims to encourage individual ownership of skills development and lifelong learning. All Singaporeans aged 25 and above will receive a $500 credit from January 2016.
So where can you attend courses with your SkillsFuture Credit? Well, Professional and Adult Continuing Education (PACE) Academy, an academy of Singapore Polytechnic (SP), is a good place to start! Since 1954, SP PACE has played an important role in preparing the Singapore workforce. SP PACE has transformed from being a pacesetter to a trendsetter, constantly working with the industry to prepare the future ready workforce.
SP PACE Academy offers a list of short and modular industry-relevant training programmes in eight essential emerging skills areas: Data Analytics, Cyber Security, Finance, Entrepreneur, Tech Enabled Services, Advanced Manufacturing, Digital Media, and Urban Solutions. Whatever your age, it's never too late to start. Health research has pointed to lifelong learning as one of the best ways for seniors to stay healthy. An active mind throughout your life has been proven to help you live longer and healthier too. Let's continue life's journey by learning together!
