Tanuki Raw @ Orchard Central

A bar and restaurant serving modern, playful Japanese-meets-food-truck style cuisine, Tanuki Raw Bar is home to one of Singapore's best happy hours.

I got to taste Tanuki Raw's new menu at their new outlet at Orchard Central, and had a delish meal!

Keeping to the spirit of its namesake, Tanuki Raw offers a mash-up of Japanese-inspired cuisine with the playfulness of American street food and global influences. Dining out has taken on too much seriousness; whether it’s the decorum, cuisine boundaries, or ambience, there is too much focus on everything except for whether or not the food is good.

With the ethos of, “Make food that tastes good,” Tanuki Raw strips away rules, boundaries, and preconceptions of how various flavors go together in the search to create tasty, fun, flavorful food. In addition to the signature truffle yakiniku donburi, Tanuki Raw will be introducing new rice bowls as well as totally unique creations that are first-of-its kind in Singapore.

Tanuki Kaisen Chirashi Don, $24.90
An upgrade over their standard chirashi don, kaisen don inclues uni, tuna, negitoro, salmon, salmon belly aburi, scallop, sea bream, swordfish, white tuna, yellowtail, ikura, tamago, and ebiko over sushi rice. What can I say: it's pretty awesome to have ALL THE FRESHEST SASHIMI SERVED UP IN FRONT OF YOU. It's such a pretty dish, not only to the eyes but to your tastebuds as well.

Salmon Kaisen Don, $12.90
4 textures of salmon, all in one bowl for salmon lovers. ME!!! MY FAVOURITE!!! This did not disappoint; the different salmon sashimi are fresh and delicious in their own way. Being a salmon sashimi lover, this is a must for me whenever I visit any Japanese food stall.

Uni Donut, $21.90
Sea urchin, sour cream onsen egg on top of a tanuki-style pull apart donut made with a blend of tanuki spice mix, buckwheat and scallions. Drizzled with a burnt leek and soy dressing and topped off with bonito flakes and toasted seaweed.

Foie Gras Truffle Yakiniku Don, $19
Pan-seared foie gras, US black angus short rib, onsen egg, truffle soy, black garlic brown butter over mixed rice. Tanuki's signature mixed rice is enough for me to say yes to every single rice bowl from them! And of course this Fois Gras Truffle just made every mouthful a more satisfying experience. Did I mention how I love to let the egg yolk flow out first?

Salted Egg Char Siew Sliders, $15.90
Thick-cut Tanuki-style char siew was stacked between tomatoes, fresh greens, umami gruyere and the in-house made katsu-crusted brown butter buns with a generous dollop of tangy oko sauce.

The thick pieces of succulent meat was indeed the highlight of this slider mini burger, and I really enjoyed chomping down on it! The meat was slightly on the tough side though. Good for small bites and for sharing!

WHAM! fries, $11.90
Sweet potato fries with melted marshmallows.... NEED I SAY MORE? This is made up of umami gruyere melted over sweet potato fries topped with marshmallows, Tanuki spice mix, mozzarella and sour cream. I love how well all of these go together, and the overall result was not overly sweet! HANDS DOWN my favourite fries!!!!

Tanuki Raw is open at Orchard Central #04-01 so you know where to head to for delicious and unique Japanese cuisine! Thank you Saffron Communications for the invite, and Tanuki Raw for having me for this media tasting.
